Brașov in Winter — A Short, Cozy Escape (Slow Travel & Postcard Moments)

Spread the love
Brasov in winter

Hello and happy 2026! I wish you all that read this a kind and gentle year ahead.🎀

I have been a little MIA for a while, busy with life and everything that comes with it, but now I’m finally back in my little corner of the internet. And what better way to return than by sharing the highlight of my winter?

I’m not the biggest fan of winter traveling. Cold, bulky clothes, short days — you know the drill. But when my best friend came up with the idea, I couldn’t say no. Mostly because Brașov is one of my favorite cities. I know I say that A LOT about many cities, but it’s true every time. With Brașov I have a bit of a special connection as I visit it every year, usually in the summer, when I spend a few days in the Brașov Meadow, surrounded by mountains and forest.

You’d think that after so many visits I’ve seen everything there is to see. Everything except one thing: Brașov in winter.

Christmas market cheer

If you ever visit Brașov in winter, especially around the holidays, the Christmas market is an absolute must. The main city square transforms into a festive little village, filled with wooden huts selling everything from traditional food to hot chocolate, apple cider, mulled wine, handmade souvenirs, and local arts and crafts.

Christmas lights everywhere, the city wrapped in that cozy holiday chaos, and the unmistakable smell of mulled wine and cinnamon following you around every corner… What else could you wish for? Maybe a little bit of snow to make it extra magical. I wasn’t lucky enough to see a white Brașov this time, but the city was instead wrapped in a soft blanket of mist that made everything feel more mysterious and visually striking. I was truly glad I had my camera with me!

A small heads-up, though: the market gets crowded. VERY crowded. Patience is key during this time of year, but honestly, the atmosphere makes up for it.

You’ll also find carousels and other fun rides, and on the big stage there are usually concerts almost every evening, especially during weekends.

Sweetest Spots You Can’t Miss

Because I have seen the main attractions of the city before, multiple times actually, I mainly focused on enjoying the Christmas market and everything it had to offer.

I was in Brașov for just one day this time, but honestly, you don’t need much time to see the city’s main landmarks. Even if you’re visiting for only a day or two, these spots are easy to fit into your itinerary.

  • Black Church – Located right in the main square, it’s impossible to miss and a must for first-time visitors
  • Rope Street (Strada Sforii) – One of the narrowest streets in Europe and a quick but fun stop
  • Tampa Mountain – For panoramic views over the entire city (especially magical with snow)
  • Catherine’s Gate – The last remaining original city gate
  • The White and Black Towers – Perfect for history lovers and city views
  • Șchei District – A charming historic neighborhood just outside the old city walls

Final Notes — Why This Trip Stayed With Me

Even after visiting year after year, this winter trip reminded me that familiar places can still surprise you when you see them through a different season. Brașov in winter felt softer, cozier, and somehow more comforting. A gentle reset I didn’t even realize I needed.

Recommendations

I think you know by now that I love sharing my favorite places to eat and stay — you know, those little spots that turn a simple trip into a cozy, memorable experience.

Best restaurants in town

Sub Tâmpa

This is, without a doubt, my absolute favorite restaurant in Brașov, and I make sure to eat here every single time I visit. It’s the kind of place you return to without hesitation. Traditional Romanian dishes are reimagined with a modern twist, and everything I’ve tried has been absolutely to die for. 🤤

Set right at the foot of Tâmpa Mountain, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it the perfect spot to slow down, enjoy a comforting meal, and soak in the cozy mountain-city vibe. Whether you’re stopping by after a long walk or planning a relaxed evening out, Sub Tâmpa never disappoints.

Dei Frati

This one is often considered the best restaurant in Brașov — and honestly, for good reason. Dei Frati is the kind of place where everything feels carefully thought out, from the menu to the atmosphere. The dishes are refined, beautifully presented, and full of flavor, making it perfect for a slower, more indulgent dining experience.

If you’re looking for a spot that feels a little more special — ideal for a long dinner, good conversation, and a glass of wine — Dei Frati is definitely worth adding to your list. But make sure you make a reservation in advance because it gets booked real fast!

Accomodation

Casa Crown

Located right in the Main City Square, Casa Crown offers spacious, clean rooms and an unbeatable central location. If you’re lucky enough to get a room with a square view, the atmosphere alone makes the stay worth it. Not to mention it is extremely affordable too!
